The active ingredients in Gaviscon Original Liquid work in the following ways to provide effective relief from heartburn.
- Sodium alginate reacts with the acid in your stomach to form a thick gel-like layer, or raft.
- Calcium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate also react with stomach acid, releasing bubbles of carbon dioxide.
- These bubbles allow the raft to float on top of the contents of the stomach.
- The raft forms a strong protective barrier on top of the stomach contents, which helps to prevent stomach acid flowing back into the oesophagus.

Gaviscon Original Liquid works differently to antacids. Rather than neutralising the stomach acid (which can cause the stomach to produce more acid in reaction to the neutralisation), Gaviscon creates a strong physical barrier on top of the stomach contents. This barrier does not affect the acidity of your stomach. Instead, it helps to keep stomach acid in the stomach where it belongs and prevents it from travelling up into the oesophagus where it could cause pain or irritation.1For this reason, Gaviscon provides relief for up to 2x longer than antacids.
